Join us for a conversation about the brilliance of read alouds from the perspective of author, Rebecca Jordan-Glum, editor, Emily Feinberg, and bookseller-who-loves-storytimes, Sonia Teder-Moore!  What makes a great read aloud and how does each person in the process ensure it’s success?

Rebecca Jordan-Glum is an author, illustrator, graphic designer and artist. She spent much of her childhood in trouble for her overactive imagination and ridiculous notions but put those same traits to good use at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY where she graduated with a BFA in Communication Design, receiving Pratt’s Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievement in Illustration. She now lives back in Los Angeles with her husband, two kids, an excessively large collection of imaginary animals, and a few real cats. The Trouble with Penguins (Roaring Brook Press) is her debut picture book as author/illustrator and is a MacKids School and Library Staff Pick and an Indie Favorite! Kitty (Roaring Brook Press) just published this April.

Emily C. Feinberg  is a senior editor at Roaring Brook Press. Among other books, she is the editor of Caldecott Honor-winning Big Cat, Little Cat by Elisha Cooper, groundbreaking graphic novel Go With the Flow by Lily Williams and Karen Schneemann, and the critically-acclaimed young adult nonfiction Jane Against the World: Roe v. Wade and the Fight for Reproductive Rights by Karen Blumenthal. Emily spends her time between Brooklyn and Woodstock, New York. She loves naps and dogs and taking naps with dogs.

Sonia Teder-Moore is a literacy advocate and bookseller.  Some of Sonia’s very best friends are BOOKS! She’s shared her love of literature, and the wonderful places stories can take us, as a teacher, librarian, parent, thespian and theatre director. Originally from the island of Oahu, Hawaii, she holds a B.A in theatre from UCLA and a MA theatre education from University of Arizona. Currently a children’s bookseller and outreach coordinator at Warwick’s in La Jolla, CA, Sonia looks for any excuse to share a good story. Susannah Richards is an associate professor of education at Eastern Connecticut State University where she teaches courses in English Language Arts and Children’s and Young Adult Literature. She earned a PhD in Educational Psychology/Gifted Education from the University of Connecticut. She was a member of the 2013 John Newbery Award Committee, 2017 Geisel Committee, and other book award committees. You can always identify Susannah Richards by the white file box full of books she’s lugging from one place to the next. Often heard before seen, Susannah’s mission is to spread the joy and appreciation of literature to readers of all ages. Be it through teacher education, consulting or just throwing in her two-cents whenever the opportunity arises. She regularly presents on books and book-ish topics at international, national and state conferences including ILA, NCTE, AASL, NCSS and NSTA .
